Did You Know?

The Earth's spherical inner core is around 2,400km in diameter and mostly made of iron. At 5,000 – 6,000 degrees C it is still solid rather than liquid because of the immense pressures in the Earth’s interior. Many geologists now believe that this gigantic ball of iron is actually a single crystal. The core is about three-quarters of the size of the Moon, and has a mass of around one hundred million million tonnes.
